His long career started when he joined the soul revue band “Zoot and the Roots” as a session musician. To date, Snake has recorded on more than 400 tracks for over 60 artists and the list keeps growing. He has played and recorded with artists ranging from James Brown to Paul McCartney, The Eurythmics to Amy Winehouse. Snake is the only saxophonist who can literally make his instruments sing!

Best Kept Secret Unearthed - The Gel..!

THE GEL “…the best kept skin-care secret in the beauty world.” Leslie Kenton

A year ago, I was browsing through my copy of Cygnus Review when I saw an advertisement for The Gel – a skin care product that ‘encourages healing of cuts, acne, sores, burns and other skin problems’. I decided to send for a 60 ml jar - £28. 00 (excluding postage and packing).

My parcel of Gel arrived next morning so I tried it out straight away on a spot that had appeared on my face and quickly discovered how truly amazing The Gel is. When a friend burned her hand quite badly, I sent her some Gel and she was delighted because her burn healed very quickly.

Another friend – an executive chef - burned her hand and again I sent along some Gel with the same result.,

I got in touch with Beth Gagnon, of Gagnon Essentials in London to find out more. According to Beth ‘the Gel was developed in the United State of America over 20 years ago and is now manufactured in the UK. The Gel, containing caesium chloride, draws on the research of a Chinese surgeon trained in both Western and traditional Chinese medicine.

Beth also sent me a copy of an article written by Nona Summers for “Vogue” magazine, in which Nona described a very special facial available at Gagnon premises in London. Definitely on my wish list.

Aussie Karrie Webb Wins Her 37th LPGA Title

Karrie Webb demonstrated precisely the right mix of patience and pluck as she won the HSBC Women's Champions at Tanah Merah by a shot from Chie Arimura, the game little Japanese player who had led for so much of the tournament.

On what was a thriller of an afternoon, Webb, who had been three behind leaving the 10th green, was home in 33 to add a 69 to earlier scores of 70, 66 and 70.

The 36-year-old Australian could not have been more right with her Saturday-night prediction that it would be "a battle right to the end." Arimura, in spite of her relative inexperience of playing among the LPGA contingent, refused to go away and had a 25-footer at the last to force a play-off.

It may have been Webb's 51st title overall but she could not have looked more elated had it been her first which, for the record, was the 1995 British Women's Open championship at Woburn.

"It feels great," she said. "It was a bit of an up-and-down day so I feel very happy to be slinking away with a one shot win.

"Chie," she said, "handled herself really well and was in with a chance all the way. I know she's won in Japan but today would have been a different feeling. She really toughed it out."

We would like to thank the students of Blackpool and
the Fylde College, who organised The Blackpool Fashion Show on Saturday, 26th February in the Spanish Hall at the Winter Gardens in aid of Cancer Research UK.

We experienced what it must be like to attend London Fashion Week with a glass of champagne on arrival and goody bags to take home.

Rae Morris (top photo), talented local singer/songwriterand local singer Kyle James entertained. We thought the models were professionals they were so good but they were also students from the College and included one of the organisers and two Miss Blackpool 2010 Finalists, Holly Robinson and Lauren Carr - who is also the reigning Miss Radio Wave.

The truly wonderful event was compered by Radio Wave Breakfast Show presenter Hayley Kay.

Well done to all concerned!

Cafe Of The Month Award For February - Pavilion Tea Room & Restaurant

The Pavilion Tea Rooms & Restaurant in Ashton Gardens, St Annes has been presented with the Best Kept Secrets award for Cafe of the Month for February.

As well as excellent food and drink, and friendly service, the Pavilion held a delightful dinner jazz evening at the start of the month and also thrilled us with its amazing courgette carrot cake - a carrot cake made with courgettes instead of carrots and which tasted infinitely nice than it sounded....

Reigning Miss Fylde Coast Kerry Capoverde was on hand to present the award to staff members at the recently opened venue, as she toured the area to promote this year's Miss Fylde Coast competition.

Best Kept Secrets aim to reward quality of service, range and freshness of fare, cleanliness of facilties and that certain "je ne sais quoi" with their monthly awards made to cafes and restaurants along the Fylde Coast and beyond.

Local cafe goers and bon viveurs can recommend their own favourites by sending an email to paul@bestkeptsecrets.biz and they can also leave their own comments on cafes that have already been reviewed on this website.

Temperance 7 At Marine Hall - Review & Photos

We drove to Fleetwood along the Promenade in Blackpool just before it shuts to all traffic until the transformation work is complete in June. The Illuminations were switched on because of the Showzam festival and that set the tone for the evening.

This really was a fantastic evening of traditional jazz entertainment.  It started off with a great set by local jazz favourites Mike Lovell’s Six in a Bar with Rosie, who it is always a great pleasure to listen to.

The Temperance Seven, who celebrate 54 years in show business this year, played some wonderful pieces, including their big hit "You Are Driving Me Crazy", "Dinah", our own favourite "Me and Jane In A Plane" and finished with The Charleston for an encore.

Not content with being top-class musicians, the Temperance Seven are also comedians and had the audience in stitches throughout. Singer and announcer "Colonel" Derek Galloway even had his head stuck in a sousaphone at one point...!

If you missed it, there are other jazz events coming to Fleetwood including special jazz weekends at the North Euston Hotel over Easter and in December.

Further Marine Hall dates include the Blue Devils Jazz Orchestra on 17th June and the Pasadena Roof Orchestra on 14th October - for tickets and more details, check out http://www.marinehall.co.uk/

It is a work that looks frankly at some of the darker sides of parenthood and the demands put on a relationship when a first baby enters the home. The Drifters 2011 UK Tour

The Drifters will be back on tour in the UK this year to coincide with the release of the group’s Greatest Hits album The Drifters ‘Up On The Roof’ - to be released on Sony Music on March 21 2011

Billed as the 'Icons' tour, the current recording line up of The Drifters will perform the group’s greatest hits and new material featured on the new album, paying special homage to some of the most prestigious former recording artists of this group including icons Clyde McPhatter, Rudy Lewis, Ben E King, Bill Frederikse & Johnny Moore.

The high-energy concert highlights the numerous musical reincarnations of this group from early Doo Wop classics such as ‘Fools Fall In Love’ and ‘Let The Boogie Woogie Roll’ to much loved early pop/rock ‘n roll hits such as ‘Sand in My Shoes, ‘More Than A Number,’ ‘Come on Over to My Place’, ‘Up On The Roof,’ ‘Under the Boardwalk’, ‘Kissin In The Back Row’ and ‘Save The Last Dance For Me.’

The show also features tracks from the disco era as well as latest releases such as ‘Do You Dream Of Me’ again on the new album, following the more recent reinvention of the group - contemporary new material that has evolved out of the group’s diverse historical musical genres and that is enhanced by the authentic Drifters signature harmonies and sound.

Current Drifters line up member Michael Williams says: "We have just finished a gruelling week of physical training and rehearsals for the forthcoming Icons Tour and we are very excited about going back on the road - expect a show packed with songs recorded by some of the greatest members of this line up - we also have some surprises in store - expect a great show!"

The new 70 date tour starts in the UK at the Liverpool Empire on February 6th. More dates are being added all the time. (On sale dates vary).

Circus Of Horrors At Blackpool Grand Theatre

The spectacular Circus of Horrors screams back into Blackpool’s Grand Theatre on Sunday 27th February with the brilliantly bizarre new production The Four Chapters from Hell as part of the resort’s Showzam! ’11 festival.

The terrifying troupe will take you on a journey through all four incredible incarnations of the rocking and shocking Circus of Horrors to celebrate its 15th bloody year of treading the boards.

Roary The Racing Car At Blackpool Grand Theatre

ROARY THE RACING CAR zooms into Blackpool’s Grand Theatre on February 23rd & 24th for the very first time in his high octane live show "Champion of Champions"

It’s the Champion of Champions race at Silver Hatch and Roary is revving up to battle it out with Maxi, Cici and the gang to win the race and lift the trophy. Farmer Green has created some special bio fuel to make sure the race is the fastest and the greenest ever – but hang on – Flash has his eyes on that fuel for his skateboard and Big Chris seems more interested in baking pizza and eating doughnuts than preparing the cars for the race. Luckily, Marsha Marshall is on hand to make sure that everyone will be ready at the track - but who will win the race and be crowned the champion?

As with the animated TV series on Channel Five’s Milkshake! and Nick Jr, this exciting new live show stars racing legend Sir Stirling Moss as the narrator and the veteran voice of motorsport Murray Walker will be commentating on the big race at Silver Hatch racetrack!

Murray Walker comments: "This is the first time that a number of characters from the programme will make a public appearance. I am delighted to be part of this new stage show, Champion of Champions. It is a lot of fun for all the family – anything can happen in Roary the Racing Car, and it usually does!"

Have Your Own Red Carpet Experience For Charity!

FORGET London’s Leicester Square – All the red carpet glamour of a film premiere is coming to the Ace Centre, Nelson, later this month.

‘West is West’, sequel to the iconic ‘East is East’, will be screened on Saturday, 26 February, at a charity event with a red carpet, ‘paparazzi’ snappers, limousines, live entertainment and more.

The film revisits the dysfunctional Khan family in mid-seventies Manchester and sees youngest son Sajid packed off to the Punjab by his tyrannical father, George, in an attempt to teach the teen about tradition.

However, it’s George who ends up with the biggest lesson to learn, and long-suffering mum Ella has to travel to Pakistan to sort out the mess, past and present.

The film will be screened in the Ace Centre’s modern cinema, which seats up to 200 people.

Tickets cost £10 and the event aims to raise money and awareness for the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign.

Shabana Kauser, spokesperson for organiser Synergy360, said:

“The vision is to re-create the glitz and glam of a London premiere in the North. We have the red carpet, limo, paparazzi, drinks on arrival, a make-up artist and photo opportunities.

”It should be a great night out – a chance to see this extremely funny film – and raise money for a cause that is close to our hearts.”
