Blackpool Scoring Legend Looking Forward To Historic Seagulls Return

1980s Canadian ice hockey legend Bruce Sims will be pulling on a Blackpool shirt for the first time in 30 years on Saturday (30th) as he makes a special guest appearance for the Blackpool Seagulls in their friendly match against Birmingham Rockets at the SubZero Ice Arena in Cleveleys.

Bruce and his twin brother Brian played 53 competitive games for Blackpool in 2 seasons from 1981 to 1983, with Bruce scoring 113 goals and 97 assists helping them to the English League North title in 1982 and runners up position in British League Division One in 1983.

The following season, Bruce and Bruce moved to play for Southampton Vikings, where they won Heineken League Division One and promotion to the Premier Division. Brian also later played for Altrincham Aces and Trafford Metros while Bruce returned to play for the Don Mills Comets professional Canadian touring team.

The Sims twins played a big part in the development of ice hockey in Britain in the early 80s, scoring over 570 points between them in 232 matches and Bruce’s return to the ice is keenly anticipated.

Bruce Sims said: “Over the years I have remained in contact with some of the Blackpool players and can’t wait to renew those friendships. I am now 58 years old and still playing three times a week and in the odd tournament. Now I just have to stay healthy enough to play through the aches and pains and once again put the Seagull sweater on and relive the old days!”

A special souvenir programme looking back at the Sims twins’ time in Britain has been produced for the match and proceeds from sales on the night will go to Brian House Childrens’ Hospice in Blackpool.

The match faces off at 6pm with doors opening for spectators at 5pm. Admission is just £2 for adults and £1 for children.

Reigning Miss Blackpool Kim Braithwaite will also be attending the match to support the Brian House fundraising effort, meet the fans and pose for photos.

M & S Big Beach Clean up - Friday 11th May - Sunday, 13th May 2013

Marks & Spencer (M&S) is encouraging its customers to sign-up to become big beach cleaners and help the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) clean Britain's beaches and protect our seas.
The first ever M&S Big Beach Clean-up, organised by the MCS, will take place between Friday 11th May and Sunday 13th May and the aim will be to stop common items such as fishing nets, ropes and bottles tops polluting our beaches and seas.
Younger customers can get involved with free beach activity packs, rock pooling rambling and be on the lookout for unexpected items. Previous MCS beach cleans have found unusual items such as bicycles, rubber ducks and superhero outfits.
It's hoped that thousands of people will roll-up their sleeves and clean 50 beaches across the UK. Customers that register in advance at www.mcsuk.org/foreverfishwill receive a money-off at M&S voucher* and will get some free M&S snacks on the day of the clean.
At six specially selected beaches there's an extra incentive to get involved. There will be a free barbecue and kids' games organised by the National Schools Partnership. Locations include Clacton-On-Sea, Hazelbank near Belfast and Cramond near Edinburgh.
Richard Gillies, Director of Plan A, M&S' eco and ethical programme, said: “Our customers care passionately about where their food comes from, especially fish. We only source from the most sustainable sources, but this is something more, this is our chance to get out onto beaches with our customers and take direct action to help protect marine life and our coastline.”
Samantha Fanshaw, MCS Chief Executive, said: "MCS surveys have shown that litter levels are unacceptably high. We are delighted that M&S staff and customers recognise the importance of clean seas and beaches and will be joining forces with us in this major event to help turn the tide on litter."
The M&S Big Beach Clean-up is part of M&S' Forever Fish campaign which is funded by the 5p carrier bag charge in M&S foodhalls. Since its introduction in 2008, the charge has reduced carrier bag use by 80 per cent and raised over £4 million for charity.
Customers can find out more www.marksandspencer.com/plana and follow the event on twitter (@marksandspencer or search #beachclean) and facebook (www.facebook.com/marksandspencer).

Review: The Sands Venue, Blackpool - Swing Night

If you like Swing music - Count Basie, Sinatra, etc. and the music and lyrics of the likes of Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, the Gershwins and so on - then this is definitely for you.

When you book - and there is always a delightful young lady to steer you through the booking process whether you go in person to the booking office or book by phone - you are given the menu choices of the evening in question, so that you can choose from a choice of three or four starters, mains and desserts with a cheese option (or as an add on) and if there is nothing you like/can eat on the menu then just tell the helpful staff at The Sands and they will find you something to your taste.

On the evening, your evening's entertainment starts right at the main entrance on the Promenade where you are greeted by the man on the door and shown to the lifts.  Then on the first floor for the Cabaret venue - which with the decor alone will make you think you are in Las Vegas - you are greeted and shown to your table.   The attentive and helpful staff serve your meal at the table and bring you drinks.

After the meal, the show starts at around 9 pm and Paul Ellis with his warm, silky voice sings the Swing songs that made Sinatra famous, accompanied by the 7-piece Sands of highly-talented musicians led by Neil Shatliff on trumpet.   If you feel like dancing (but you certainly don't 'have' to) then there is plenty of room and a very good dance floor - well several in fact.

The show is in two halves with a short interval for replenishing drinks, etc.  If you have a special favourite song or if you are celebrating a special event do let Paul know in advance - it would surprise me if there was a song not in his very extensive repertoire but you never know.  All this for £24.99 per person (not including drinks) and I think you have a real bargain.

And if by any chance Swing music is not for you, well the Sands have a wide variety of events coming up with tribute bands offering music of many different genres so do have a look at their website.

You can also hear (and dance to) Paul Ellis with the Sands Trio at the Sands Tea Dances which are great fun - for details call 01253 625262.

During the Summer months The Sands will be featuring the famous Legends show - so do check out the details.
