Neon Choir are proud to announce the launch of their latest mini-album, titled ‘Animal’, which marks a new stage in the career of this talented London-based indie band. ‘Animal’ consists of six original songs that showcase Neon Choir’s diverse influences and range of musical styles, bringing together killer rock riffs, disco beats, delicate folk and sunshine pop. Weaving through the songs is the theme of love found and lost – and while the lyrics may make your heart ache, the rhythmic drive and irresistible guitar hooks will certainly get your feet moving.
The album opens with ‘Corpse in the Hull’, which builds dramatically from a throbbing bass riff to an explosive climax. The hugely danceable ‘I Love You (Please Leave Me Alone)’ is driven by disco beats and guitar loops, while stand-out track and first single ‘Icecream Float’ is a shining summer anthem to broken hearts. The title track ‘Animal’ shows off the stunning vocal talents of lead singer Amy Sutton in an Elbow-esque ode to dark desire. ‘Oh The Shame of It’ sees the band in pounding rock mode, while closing track ‘Sunshine’ is a simple but fragile portrayal of intimacy.
Neon Choir’s influences are numerous and diverse, and the songs on this EP bring together musical flavours from artists such as Radiohead, Elbow, aKING, K’s Choice, and Minus the Bear. Guitarist Matthew Moult says of the band’s song-writing: “We always try to keep it simple – if a musical idea is good, there’s no need to over-complicate it. We write songs that we think are a pleasure to listen to, and that people can connect with, however sophisticated the arrangements or complex the layers underneath might be.”
The band was formed in 2003 in Durban, South Africa, by Amy Sutton and Matthew Moult. Since then, Neon Choir has made the journey to its present London home, acquiring along the way the talents of drummer Catherine Pate. The band is currently working with a new bassist, and will be delighted to introduce them at one of the forthcoming spring shows.
The band was nominated for Best New UK Act at the 2009 Balcony TV awards, performing at the Awards Ceremony in Dublin, and was main support on the Women’s Stage at the 2009 London Pride festival. Neon Choir are regular performers across London, playing venues such as The Scala, The Garage, Proud Galleries, Islington Academy, and Barden’s Boudoir, among many others. They have supported acts such as Husky Rescue, Arno Carstens, Liam Finn and The Parlotones and this year will reprise their 2010 appearance at GoGo Festival in Kent and plan to tour the UK.
