Fylde's National School 7s Tournament, sponsored for the first time by North West-based international sportwear company Kukri Sports, will be held for the 63rd successive year this coming weekend, Saturday & Sunday, 12th & 13th March 2011.
Over 420 young rugby players from all over the England & Wales plus teachers and parents will descend on the Woodlands for one of the most important 7s tournaments in the school rugby calendar.
The Tournament has attracted 42 teams from 39 schools including the current holders of the Trophy, Ivybridge Community College and recent champions from the locality, Kirkham Grammar School.
This major national competition will be, as in the past, a two-day competition with the usual format - leagues followed by the three knock-out competitions. The top two in each group go into the main competition, the next two to the plate and the remaining two into a bowl competition.
One of the unique features of this tournament is that it brings together schools from the British Isles to play against schools they do not normally meet in the regular rugby calendar.
Referees for the Tournament will be provided mainly by the Manchester & District Rugby Union Referees’ Society. However, on the Sunday of the competition there will be two Polish referees who are on an exchange visit to England.
