Ice Hockey: Flyers Mauled By Sharks in Tough Away Test

The Fylde Coast's new ice hockey team the Fylde Flyers were shot down last night away at fancied Scottish outfit Solway Sharks and came home on the wrong end of a 16-0 defeat (6-0, 7-0, 3-0).

The Solway Sharks website - http://www.solwaysharks.co.uk/ - reported as follows:

"On Saturday evening the Sharks met the Fylde Flyers for the very first time and came away with an excellent sixteen-nil English National League victory.

After a sloppy start from both sides Nathan Salem opened the scoring for the Sharks in the fourth minute. The Dumfries side proceeded to find the net on a regular basis for the remainder of the period and Adam Reynolds, Lewis Gold Mark Gallagher, terry Robertson and Salem again all scored to make it six-nil Sharks at the first interval.

In the second period the cavalcade of goals continued and Ross Murray with a hat trick, together with a brace from both Mark Gallagher and Lewis Gold gave the home side a very comfortable thirteen goal margin at the second intermission.

Solway took their foot off the pedal somewhat in the third period but they still ran in a further three goals from Lewis Gold (with his fourth of the night) and Adam Reynolds before captain Mark Gallagher became the second Sharks player to score his fourth goal of the evening. "

Putting things in perspective, Flyers can't be too disheartened by this result. It was only their second ever competitive match while Solway are most people's favourites to win the ELD2N title and it is argued they should have been placed in a higher league in the first place.  They have now won all 6 of their league games - including 20-0 away at Lancashire Raptors - and have only once failed to get into double figures (when they beat Bradford 9-1...) .

Fylde Flyers have an early chance of revenge as they travel back up to Solway next Saturday for another away fixture!
