The Old Course prepares to host the 2013 Ricoh Women's British Open

England’s Mel Reid launched the countdown to the 2013 Ricoh Women’s British Open today when she teed off on the Old Course marking the Championship’s return to St Andrews, Scotland, from 1st to 4th August.
In 2007 the Ricoh Women’s British Open made history as the first ladies professional tournament to be played on the Old Course and was won by crowd favourite and then World No.1, Lorena Ochoa. The return to St Andrews has been much anticipated by players and spectators alike and Reid enjoyed her sneak preview of the famous Old Course.

She explained, “I feel very privileged to have the opportunity to get an early feel for the course and I am really excited about playing here in August. I came here as an amateur in 2007 and finished T16th so I have amazing memories of competing here and they all came flooding back today. The Ricoh Women’s British Open is always played on fantastic courses but there is no doubt that all the players are thrilled to be returning to St Andrews this year. You can’t help but feel inspired by history of the course and the very unique atmosphere around St Andrews.”

Last year the Championship was hosted at Royal Liverpool Golf Club for the first time and, with the field including 27 nationalities and 20 Major Champions boasting 41 Major Championships between them, South Korea’s Jiyai Shin won her second Ricoh Women’s British Open title. Her first victory came at Sunningdale in 2008.
Defending Champion Shin earlier explained, “I loved visiting St Andrews in 2007 but at the time I wasn’t very experienced in playing links golf so this time I think I will have a much better chance. Each year I have learnt so much about playing on links courses and, at Hoylake, I managed to put everything into practice to achieve such a special win. I hope I can do the same this year as I think winning a Major on the Old Course might be the very best thing you can experience in golf.”

Shona Malcolm, the LGU’s CEO said, “The 2007 Championship was an unprecedented success and we have all been looking forward to the second edition to be held here at the Old Course. We have many of Britain’s best courses on our Championship rotation and we are delighted to once again be so warmly welcomed by the St Andrews Links Trust for what I believe will be another wonderful Championship.”

Guy Kinnings, Global Managing Director, IMG Golf, added, ‘The Ricoh Women’s British Open is one of the highlights of the global golf schedule. IMG are delighted and proud to be part of the Championship and with our partners the LGU and Ricoh and the sanctioning Tours the LPGA and Ladies European Tour. This will mark the seventh year of Ricoh’s title sponsorship and we are very grateful for their wholehearted support and commitment to growing this great Championship year on year.”

Simon Sasaki, Corporate Executive Vice President, Chief Marketing Officer, Ricoh Company, Ltd. explained, “We begun our relationship with the Ricoh Women’s British Open here at St Andrews in 2007 and, having announced last year that we are extending our sponsorship to at least 2016, it is wonderful to return to the Home of Golf to celebrate this wonderful relationship.”

Mr Sasaki added, “Together with the LGU, IMG, the LPGA and Ladies European Tour we look forward to this year’s Championship and the years ahead as we aim to further develop and enhance this great tournament in-keeping with our corporate tagline, imagine. change.”
Paul Bush OBE, Chief Operating Officer for EventScotland added, “Scotland is the home of golf and we are delighted to welcome back the Ricoh Women’s British Open to St Andrews this year. This is the second hosting of the tournament as part of our 10 year agreement to bring the world’s top women golfers to Scotland every other year, and it is one of seven leading golf events taking place in Scotland in 2013. The championship at Carnoustie in 2011 was a huge success and I am sure we will build on that and previous editions at the Old Course in August.”

The Championship Committee also today announced two significant new partners at the 2013 Championship. Edinburgh Audi, part of the Lomond Group, are confirmed as the Official Car for the Championship and will provide vehicles for the Championship Courtesy Car service. Established in 1998 the Lomond Group are now one of Europe’s largest Audi dealers, with showrooms in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Stirling and Ayr. The Lomond Group employs over 350 highly experienced and dedicated staff who sell around 8,000 cars every year.
They are joined by Swinging Skirts, a private Taiwanese organization made up of both men and women amateur golfers. Its members are avid golfers and very good friends who wear skirts or kilts when they play. Their aim is to bring a fun atmosphere to the tradition that is golf.  Their sponsorship of the Ricoh Women’s British Open complements their title sponsorship of the Swinging Skirts World Ladies Masters, launched in 2011 the tournament has become an official leg of both the Taiwan Ladies Professional Golf Association and the Korea Ladies Professional Golf Tour.

This year fans will again be able to watch the BBC’s extensive live coverage of the Ricoh Women’s British Open in HD (high definition) on all fours days of the Championship, underlining the significance of the event in the BBC’s sports portfolio.

The Ricoh Women’s British Open was founded by the LGU in 1976 and is staged in conjunction with IMG, the world’s largest sports marketing company. The event has been co-sanctioned by the LPGA and LET since 1994 and gained Major status in 2001.

Ricoh, the leading technology provider of Managed Document Services and Production Printing, has been the title sponsor of the Ricoh Women’s British Open since 2007.

Recycling in Blackpool - Bristol Avenue - check out the shop

Great news!  I promised I would find out for you and Leo, who runs the shop at Blackpool's Recycling Centre on Bristol Avenue, has said that anyone can go and browse in the shop and buy if they see something they like - and you really ought to go and look because it is AMAZING!   You can drive in and there's plenty of space to park.

The only thing is that due to the automatic number plate recognition if you don't live in Blackpool you can't throw anything away while you are there.   On the other hand, if you have any bric-a-brac you need to dispose of, Leo says you may leave it at the shop.

HAPPY RECYCLING!

Helping our Honey Bees

Believe it or not we all need bees and they do a wonderful job.  Without them, we would have no crops because it is the bees who do the job of pollination.   And they have done it for years with no help from us and all free.   Workers like that really do need our support.   Our bees are under threat from pollution.

How can we help?

Buy local honey - this may also help combat hay fever.

Sponsor a hive.

Plant bee-friendly plants and persuade your local authority to do the same.

Lancashire Honey Farmer Craig Hughes at Crossmoor Honey Farm, Keeps Barn Farm, Crossmoor, Lancashire PR4 3XB has a couple of fantastic options available for those who would like to sponsor a hive.  So why not contact Craig and see how you can help.

To find out more contact Craig on 01995 672582, e-mail him on beehq@crossmoorhoney.com or go on the website www.crossmoorhoney.com

STOP PRESS

Robin at 38 Degrees just sent me this:

Next week environment ministers from across Europe will come together to decide the fate of our bees. They’ll vote on a ban of these pesticides - but Owen Paterson, our environment minister, is currently saying he’ll vote against. [1]

We only have one week to show him that he’s not only going against science, he’s going against public opinion too. Already, over 160,000 38 Degrees members have signed a petition to push Paterson to vote the right way and back a ban.

Please add your name to the petition before next Monday’s crucial vote:
https://secure.38degrees.org.uk/save-our-bees

Summer skies used to hum furiously with busy bees, pollinating our strawberries, carrots and cucumbers. [2] But bee numbers have been declining for many years and the countryside is suffering. Scientific studies point the finger firmly at certain pesticides but despite all the evidence, our minister is still planning to vote against a ban.

Changing his mind won’t be easy - we’re battling against furious lobbying from big pesticide companies who put their profits first. [3] But the tide is turning. The scientific evidence is on our side, and the weight of public opinion on this is becoming difficult to ignore.

We have stood against those that seek to cash in on our countryside before, and we won. [4] These pesticide companies are desperate to defeat Monday’s vote. They may have the money to make a lot of noise, but we have something their cash can’t buy: people power. When we stand together, we stand for the interests of the many over the few. Let’s make Owen Paterson sit up and take notice.

Can you sign the petition to tell him to vote to protect our bees?

Bruce Sims Presentation To Trinity Hospice / Brian House

We visited Brian House Children's Hospice and Trinity Hospice in Blackpool today with Canadian ice hockey player Bruce Sims who has come over for a visit and to play some games with the Blackpool Seagulls ice hockey team for whom he originally starred back in the early 1980s.

We produced a special souvenir programme to cover the two games that Bruce would be playing in and looking back over his time playing in Britain along with his twin brother Brian, during which they won league title with both Blackpool Seagulls and Southampton Vikings.

Bruce said: "I am very pleased to be able to help raise money for the Hospice in this way.  The programme is a really great tribute and I have been deeply touched by the warm welcome that I have received wherever I have gone in Blackpool."

The grand total has not yet been finalised as we are still collecting donations but we wanted to go and take the photo before Bruce flew back to Canada - so there is still time to give if you so wish!

If you would like to buy a copy of the Sims Souvenir programme, click here: http://www.poshupnorth.com/2013/04/bruce-sims-souvenir-ice-hockey-programme.html

Bruce has kindly agreed to allow his name to be used for our continued fundraising effort in aid of Brian House Childrens' Hospice and we have set up a Just Giving page in case anybody would like to make a donation.  To make a donation, click here:  www.justgiving.com/seagullsimsflyingvisit

Review: Blackpool Household Recycling Centre, Bristol Avenue, Blackpool

Recycling - the new 'black'

I always thought that recycling was, well, recycling but it appears this is not quite the case.

Now it seems you may only take items to the household recycling centre in which you pay your local Council Tax.  So, if you don't live in Blackpool, you will miss out on a fascinating experience.

The Centre in Blackpool is extremely well-organised and easy to use with plenty of space for parking
and clearly marked bays for various items, such as Plastic, Wood, Non-recyclable goods (that's the stuff
that used to go in the dustbin in the old days), Glass and so on and so on.

The helpful staff are on hand in case you are not sure where things go - oil, for instance, or broken glass, etc.

But, best of all, there is now a Recycle Shop - rather like a charity shop.   Here you can browse the fascinating items that are on sale to help with the high cost of disposing of our rubbish.  There
is a wide variety of glass ware, crockery, books, CDs, Videos, handbags and lots of different items of furniture.   If you are looking for something I'd start there because it is a veritable treasure trove.   And everything is very reasonably priced - I found a Marti Pellow Hits CD for just 50p.

Unfortunately, as I said, if you do not reside in Blackpool you would not be able to use the Centre because there is a number plate recognition service in operation but I am not certain whether you could perhaps park on the road and walk to the shop - I will find out and let you know!

Happy Recycling!

Review: Sunday Lunch at Toast in Wood Street, St. Annes on the Sea, Lancashire

Toast have been in Blackpool for years and now they have branched out into St. Annes and their venue  at 21 - 23 Wood Street has a lot to offer.  The usual Toast treats, plus a comprehensive Sunday lunch menu and we can definitely recommend this - especially the mouthwatering roasts!

But you don't have to eat, there is a nice, separate bar area and you can just chill out and have a drink - plenty of room.

An added treat yesterday (Easter Sunday - 31.3.13), was Sara Cheston and That Swing Thing Band playing from 3 pm until 6 pm.

With Sara were Gabor on Saxophone, Tony Hitchin on Bass, Brian Costello on Drums and Barry Cotton on Keyboard.   Brian's backing to Sara's rendition of "Fever" the Peggy Lee classic was absolutely mesmerising.

We hear that there will be music on at Toast every other Sunday so check out their website for details -
