Save the Last Dance will take you back through the music and magic of the early 60s, a time when each passing week brought another Rock ‘n’ Roll classic!
Comedy writers Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran are responsible for some of BBC television’s most beloved sitcoms including Birds of a Feather (a stage adaptation of which came to The Grand last month), Goodnight Sweetheart, The New Statesman and Shine on Harvey Moon...they’ve now turned their hand to a new stage musical Save The Last Dance, coming to The Grand from Monday 18th June.
Two teenage sisters embark on their first holiday without their parents in the summer of ’63. Full of freedom and high spirits they meet a handsome young American who invites them to a dance at the local US Air Force base...but young love and holiday romance is never as simple as it sounds. The sisters soon realise that while the world around them is still watching itself in black and white, life and love can be much more colourful.
One of the most important rock and roll writing teams of the late-50s and early-60s, second only to Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman were responsible for more than 500 songs between 1958 and 1965. With Shuman composing the music and Pomus writing the lyrics, they achieved their greatest success writing for The Drifters and Elvis Presley, who recorded more than 20 of their songs.
Featuring the songwriting duos unmistakable music, Save the Last Dance is a nostalgic, feel-good journey. If you liked Dreamboats and Petticoats you’ll love Save the Last Dance!
Save the Last Dance is at The Grand from Monday 18th to Saturday 23rd June.
