Ice Hockey: Flyers Look To Gain Ground On Rivals

Fylde Flyers ice hockey team will be looking to pull away from their nearest rivals Sheffield Senators when the two teams meet at the Sub Zero ice arena in Cleveleys on Saturday for what should be a thrilling English League Division 2 North encounter.
Both teams have the same playing record - 5 wins, 1 Draw and 14 defeats from 20 games - but the Flyers currently occupy 6th place in the table and Senators 7th due to results between the two teams.

The Flyers have faced the Senators twice in Sheffield so far this season, losing 4-3 in November and winning 5-2 in February, and will be hoping to make the compact nature of their home ice work in their favour.

Next in the Flyers sights will be 5th placed Bradford Bulldogs who currently have a 3 point advantage over the Flyers but have played 5 more games.

Fylde have played all their games against the Bulldogs from this season, winning both home games and losing both away games, but with 2 home games to come against Sheffield, 2 home enounters with Flintshire Freeze, home and way clashes with Sutton Sting and then an exciting last dash weekend on 14th /15th April at home to Hull and away to bottom club Lancashire Raptors, there's still lots to look forward to in this exciting first season of ED2N ice hockey on the Fylde Coast.

ACE Centre

The ACE Centre in Nelson, East Lancashire, is a Community Centre with facilities for everyone,
including dance studios, recording facilities, function rooms, meeting rooms, a bistro (opening out on to a courtyard) and a theatre/cinema.

On Saturday, 3rd March 2012, the ACE Centre presented an evening organised by Music Cuisine

The first performcr on stage was Sean Roche.  Described in the 'a la carte menu' detailing the evening's entertainment, Sean is 'Burnley's best kept secret'.  An acoustic guitarist who uses all of his guitar "for melody, percussion and texture".

We were extremely impressed with Sean, whose style is reminiscent of Jon Gomm's much-acclaimed 'guitar-percussion'.   Sean definitely had the "Wow" factor (to quote Stephen Fry's reaction to Jon Gomm on YouTube).

"Gone Swishing - instead of only wishing..." - Swish for Victory!

Those of you who regularly peruse Best Kept Secrets will know that we have recently posted details of "Swish for Victory" events.  These are organised by Nicole Morgan and on Friday last we had the chance to go and find out what goes on.  Nicole hires a venue and invites people to come along.

Tickets are around £5 per person and there is a raffle with delectable prizes in aid of local charities. Swishing is a new way of tidying up your wardrobe and finding new to you items.   According to Nicole, the "Rules of the Rail" are:

. take along one item of clothing, a pair of shoes or an accessory/piece of jewellery

. you have an hour or so to browse (and buy raffle tickets/chat/have a drink) before the Swish opens

. once the Swish is declared open, you may take as many items as you wish but ...
please remember we are ladies so no scratching, biting or spitting....

Et voila!

The one we attended was held at kokos in Burnley - a very nice venue, housing a Thai Restaurant and a club for mature people.   There were two large rails of clothes, loads of shoes, boots, handbags, belts and hats and several pieces of jewellery.  So there you have it swishing.

Nicole told us she is hoping to roll the idea out all over Lancashire - so watch this space.
