Heroes Of The Line - Charity ebook in aid of Royal British Legion

Here's a chance to read a really fascinating book and help a good cause at the same time. With many people's attention now firmly fixed on the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War next year, there are lots of great publications coming out that look back at that pivotal moment of world history but this book brings the story right up to date.

Scott Addington tells the story of how he and his friend decided to CYCLE along the length of the front line of the Western Front, stopping off at the battlefields and war cemeteries and finishing up at the Menin Gate on Remembrance Sunday.

So this is the diary of his trip - the story of their adventure - and he also includes stories of some of the fighting men who are commemorated in the cemeteries that they visit.

The cycle ride raised £3500 for the Royal British Legion - and here is where YOU come in.  The book "Heroes Of The Line - Two Guys, Two Bikes, 500 Miles of Trenches and an Army Of Heroes" is available to buy as a kindle download from Amazon.  It only costs £2.50 and £1 from each copy sold goes to the Royal British Legion.

If you are not interested in the First World War, look upon it as a travel book - a sort of impromptu Bill Bryson on wheels - but do have a look at this, Scott has really put his heart and soul into this project and it deserves to be a great success.

You can buy the ebook from Amazon here now: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Heroes-The-Line-Scott-Addington-ebook/dp/B00EPF5W7C/ref=pd_sim_kinc_6

If you don't want to buy the ebook but still want to support Scott's fundraising, there is a Just Giving page here: www.justgiving.com/heroesoftheline

Scott also runs an interesting website called Military Research, which you can find here: http://www.military-research.co.uk/

Ice Hockey: NIHL North Round Up 26th & 27th October

Blackburn Hawks title hopes suffered a further setback as they emerged pointless from their two games this weekend.
Without the services of Captain Chris Arnone - who had been handed a 2 week suspension by the EIHA as punishment for inappropriate comments that he made on a social network, the Hawks lost 2-1 away at league leaders Billingham Stars last night (photo left) but the bigger shock came 24 hours earlier when they lost 6-3 at home to Sutton Sting who, prior to that game, had only won once all season.

Sting then went on to cement a successful two days with a 5-5 draw against 2nd placed Whitley Warriors on Sunday evening

In the other Moralee Conference (North 1) game of the weekend, Manchester Minotaurs extended their unbeaten run to 4 games in a row with 3 wins out of the last 3 with a 6-5 win over Sheffield Spartans.

In the Laidler Conference (North 2), the league's newest team Widnes Wild finally played their first game at home, although the long-hoped for spectator seating still wasn't in place for their 5-1 victory over bottom team Blackburn Eagles.

Notable in this match was the fact that the Eagles actually "won" the third period 0-1 and Eagle Adam Lutkevitch managed to pick up a 5+5+10+10 penalty at the end of the second period.
Slightly further west, league leaders Deeside Dragons reinforced their position at the top of the table with an 8-2 win over struggling Sheffield Senators.
On Saturday evening, Coventry Blaze had moved up into second place with a 7-3 away at Hull Stingrays.

"North / South Divide" - Paul's New Column For Blueliner Hockey

"North / South Divide" - is a new series of occasional pieces about current NIHL ice hockey penned by Paul ... exclusively for Blueliner Hockey.

In this first article "Bring Back The Autumn Cup", he looks at the separate cup competitions that are currently being run in National Ice Hockey League North and South and makes a few observations.

Please note - this series is highly opinionated and especially designed to stimulate healthy debate...
He also goes on about the British League period quite as lot as well.

Review: Stringers charity event in aid of Harbour House, Lytham, Monday, 21st October 2013

Those lovely people at the Clarins and Dior counters of Stringers Department Store in Lytham, Lancashire held a charity demonstration in aid of Lytham based charity Harbour House.  This was organised by Lytham Inner Wheel.

Those who attended were treated to coffee and croissants as well as a demonstration of beauty products.

Sammi from Clarins (seen in the photo left in Stringer's lovely Coffee Shop on the second floor) explained about the importance of a good beauty routine and showed us how to care for our fragile eye area by putting a tiny, rice grain sized dot of eye serum on our ring finger before gently tapping the area along the bone under the eye - outwards -and again on the bone under the eyebrow - again outwards - so as to decongest and drain any bags and puffiness.

Then it was time to show us eyeshadows and one brave lady volunteered so that Sammi could show us some lovely, warm browns and peachy colours, finishing with gold.   And last but not least, concealer to even out any anomalies in skin tone under the eye area.   Lengthening and strengthening black mascara finished the look and everyone thought the difference was amazing.

The ladies of Lytham Inner Wheel organised a Raffle and all proceeds from the £5 tickets went to Harbour House.  Everyone went downstairs to the Beauty Department for the drawing of the raffle.  In all just over £60 was raised for Harbour House.

While on the second floor of Stringers, we noticed some really fantastic clothes for men - especially shirts, sweaters and underwear so we are definitely heading back for a better look.

Thank you to Clarins, Dior, Stringers and the ladies of Lytham Inner Wheel for a delightful morning and for bringing the charity Harbour House to our attention.

Review: Sunday Lunchtime Music at the Parks Art Deco Cafe, Stanley Park, Blackpool, Lancashire

Today the featured Band was The Frank Flynn Trio and the Parks Art Deco Cafe was full of people who love music.   Along with the Frank Flynn Trio's usual wonderful, foot-tapping, finger clicking music, we were treated to not  one but three guest artists on Sunday, 20th October 2013.

Scott Dennett, the Parks Art Deco's own 'Singing Waiter' who sang at a charity event at the Cafe last November, sang for us, as did Scott's Mother Julia, who is a professional singer. Another waiter at the Cafe - Elliott Kashanava - treated us to some very fine piano playing.   Wonderful!

The usual counter service is available if you wish on Sundays but for a really enjoyable experience you are advised to book a table where your order will be taken by one of the attentive staff at the Cafe. All the usual dishes are on offer as well as Daily Specials.

Next week - Sunday, 27th October 2013 - the featured band will be Vineyard and on Sunday, 3rd November 2013 it will be Sara Cheston and That Swing Thing Band.

Music usually starts at 13h.00 and goes on until 15h.00 but do check when you book your table, as times may vary.

Don't forget the Christmas menu which is available from the beginning of December - booking also essential for that.

Planting Poppy seeds for Remembrance

Stanley Kaye from Peterborough has come up with the idea of planting poppy seeds so that next year the world is ablaze with poppies in time for the Commemoration of WW1.   His Facebook Page for all those who wish to remember with honour and dignity is 'Remembering World War 1 in 2014 one hundred years'.

Stanley's idea has caught on and gone global and was featured on Anglia TV news on Monday evening 14th October 2013, which reported on Stanley going to plant poppies at a school.

The children had written poems and Stanley asked if they could be entered into our Pendle War Poets Competition and they can because we do have an "Under 18" Section and entries are coming in for 2014 - details on www.pendlewarpoetry.com

This is just one of the planting events organised by Stanley:

The picture is "Trenches on the Somme" painted by Mary Riter Hamilton (1873 - 1954) the Canadian artist who travelled to Flanders in 1919 to paint the Aftermath.   Mary is featured in the Exhibitions "Female Poets of the First World War" in the section "Inspirational Women of WW1" - details on www.femalewarpoets.blogspot.co.uk and www.inspirationalwomenofww1.blogspot.co.uk

Dr Feelgood - CD Release & UK Tour Dates

DR. FEELGOOD

GET RHYTHM: THE BEST OF DR. FEELGOOD 1984 – 1987

Release date: 7th October / SALVOMDCD38

·         An authoritative exploration of the third phase in the story of Dr. Feelgood - 1984 to 1987 –
including the two Stiff Records albums, ‘Brilleaux’ and ‘Classic’

·         44 track album featuring the singles ‘Don't Wait Up’, ‘See You Later Alligator’
and ‘Hunting Shooting Fishing’

·         28-page booklet including rare photos and memorabilia + a new essay by writer/producer
and band confidant Will Birch

The most enduring band to emerge from the UK’s much touted pub-rock scene from the early to mid-seventies, Dr. Feelgood were the ultimate working band. Throughout their entire career, the band never left simple, hard-driving rock & roll behind, and their devotion to blues and R&B earned them a devoted fan base. From their formation in 1971 to lead vocalist Lee Brilleaux's untimely death in 1994, the band never left the road, and continue to perform today.

Get Rhythm: The Best of Dr. Feelgood 1984 – 1987 (released 7th October on Salvo Records) is a 44-track authoritative exploration on the third phase of the Dr. Feelgood story. Drawing on the best of that era, this fine collection also includes a 28-page booklet featuring rare photos and memorabilia plus sleevenotes by producer/songwriter and band confidant Will Birch.

In 1983 Lee Brilleaux recruited a new Dr. Feelgood line-up: Gordon Russell on guitar, Phil Mitchell on bass and Kevin Morris on drums. Hard-driving, visceral rhythm & blues was, naturally, their stock-in trade and over the next half a dozen years they toured widely and recorded four albums (‘Doctor’s Orders’, ‘Mad Man Blues’, ‘Brilleaux’ and ‘Classic’), the latter two, both featured here in their entirety, on the celebrated Stiff label.

Produced by Mike Vernon and released in 1984, ‘Doctors Orders’ comprised a number of R&B and blues chestnuts, complemented by original songs, two of which were penned by the band with help from long-standing friend Larry Wallis.

The next album - or 'mini-album' - was the band-produced ‘Mad Man Blues’, a tribute to six great R&B classics including the titular John Lee Hooker number for which Brilleaux sang through his guitar amp. ‘Mad Man Blues’ was eventually expanded to full album length and included here are the original six tracks plus ‘Can't Find The Lady’ by the aforementioned Wallis and the hard-to-find studio version of ‘Don't Start Me Talking’.

Signing with Stiff, a label that the Feelgoods singer had help to finance ten years earlier, the group issued the ‘Brilleaux’ and ‘Classic’ albums in 1986 and 1987 respectively. The former, produced by Will Birch, includes strong versions of Johnny Cash's ‘Get Rhythm’, John Hiatt's ‘I'm A Real Man’, Bobby Charles' ‘Grow Too Old’ and The Undertones' ‘You['ve] Got My Number’. The latter was made with producer Pip Williams and also includes some interesting covers - including Bob Dylan's ‘Highway 61 [Revisited]’ and Jerry Lynn Williams' blues ballad ‘(I Wanna) Make Love To You’. Special mention must also be made of the non-album single, ‘See You Later Alligator’, produced by Dave Edmunds and a notable hit in Europe and Australia.
