WW1 Memorial Book - "Higher Bebington's Heroes 1914 - 1919"

"Higher Bebington's Heroes 1914 - 1919" is a 122-page work of dedication by the author listing the names of the 29 men whose names are recorded on a Memorial Tablet in Christ Church in Higher Bebington, Wirral.   There is an introduction which explains Dave's family link to the First World War and a map of the area in 1910.   Dave has researched biographical details of all of the men with photographs of them and in many cases pictures of where they lived and photographs of their graves.

When you think about it, this is just one church in a relatively small English village - one tiny corner of the world. Imagine how many other, similar Memorial Tablets there must be throughout the rest of our world!  It would be great to think that eventually every single person who died in the Great War could be recorded in a similar manner. And then there are all those who helped in many different ways and whose lives were changed for ever...

"Higher Bebington's Heroes 1914 - 1919" by Dave Horne, published in 2012 by Countryvise Ltd., Birkenhead, Wirral.

"Bullets and Daffodils" The Wilfred Owen Story in Bridgenorth, 4th October 2013 7.30 pm

At The Theatre on the Steps, Stoneway Steps, Bridgenorth, Friday, 4th October 2013 at 7.30 p.m.

Tickets:  £9.00 (Concessions £7.00) from the Box Office

If you haven't seen this amazing rock musical about the life and works of the iconic WW1 poet Wilfred Owen, now is your chance.

Dean Johnson, the Wirral Singer/Songwriter who wrote the show, will be speaking to Ryan Kennedy of BBC Radio Shropshire on 28th September 2013 at 11.30 a.m.   They will be talking about the show.

West Cheshire League Division 2 - Ashville Reserves 2- Helsby 2

Ashville Reserves held top of the table Helsby to a 2-2 draw but this point probably feels more like a defeat as they were leading 2-1 with just 5 minutes to go.

More information: http://www.pitchero.com/clubs/ashville/

http://full-time.thefa.com/Index.do?league=9014877

As we were visiting the Wirral for a few days, we thought we'd go and check out Ashville FC for the first time.

There is lots of room to park as they have their own car park (which even overlooks the pitch so you don't have to get out of your car to watch the action...) and there is also another large parking area close by - shared with Wallasey Rugby Union Club - and more street parking around the surrounding industrial estate.

The club house has a large bar / social room with large screen TV and they regularly show big televised games.  As well as the bar, they also sell teas, coffees, hot dogs and burgers and, although we didn't sample any on this occasion, they did smell very nice - unlike some places you can go to...!  The toilets were well appointed and clean and tidy and the changing room block looked similarly well- built and looked after - from the outside at least.

The pitch looks very well tended and there is a small covered area where you can watch the game under shelter if needs be.

Ashville FC has a senior team who play in West Cheshire League Division 1,  the senior reserve side and also junior teams at all age groups.  The venue also plays host to Tranmere FC's Ladies team who play in the Northern Womens Combination League.

AFC Blackpool through to next round of FA Vase

Winterton Rangers 1 - AFC Blackpool 2

Goals from Peter Taberner 85 and Grant Dell 87 (in photo)gave Mechanics a last gasp 2-1 win.

WW1 Poet Isaac Rosenberg: from ‘Break of Day in the Trenches’ to the German Spring Offensive 1918 - Talk at The Imperial War Museum, London SE1

IRSAC & IWM London present

Jean Moorcroft Wilson & Max Egremont

on Saturday 9 November 2013 at 2.30 p.m.
at The Imperial War Museum, Lambeth Road, London SE1 6HZ

Max Egremont
THE LAST THROW – THE GERMAN OFFENSIVE MARCH 1918
In the war’s last years, there was a transformation, from Haig’s spring message that the British had their ‘backs to the wall’ to August 8 when Ludendorff spoke of ‘the black day of the German army’. Did the startling first successes of that spring bring the Allies near  to defeat? Was it a humiliation in particular for the British? Or were the attacks doomed before they began, as American troops started to come across and the Central Powers faced economic pressure and crumbling morale?

Jean Moorcroft Wilson
‘THROUGH THESE PALE COLD DAYS’ TO ROSENBERG’S DEATH
When the poet Isaac Rosenberg enlisted in the British Army in October 1915 it was not, he insisted, ‘for patriotic reasons’. And his experiences as a private at the Front in France, from June 1916 to his death there during the German Spring Offensive of 1918 did little to change his mind. It did, however, have a profound effect on his poetry, which gives eloquent voice to the ‘poor bloody Tommy’ and is among the greatest of the First World War. With originality of  language, thought and technique he penned some of the most devastating, yet humane words about front-line experience ever written.

Tickets £10  Available from IWM London  at 01223 449 353 or www.iwm.org.uk

NWCFL Premier Division: Squires Gate FC 3 - Silsden 2

Squires Gate picked up only their 2nd win of the season with a hard fought victory over West Yorkshire rivals Silsden.  Having taken a 2 goal lead early in the first half, Gate were pegged back top 2-2 and Silsden looked favourites to score again.

It took a goal-line scramble - in which the linesman adjudged the ball to have crossed the goal line - to decide the result.

Elsewhere in the NWCFL Premier Division, AFC Blackpool won 2-0 away at Winsford.

Squires Gate are 20th in NWCFL Premier Division with 8 points from their games so far while AFC Blackpool are 18th with 10 points from 11 games, although AFC have only been able to play two league fixtures at home so far this season due to refurbishment works on their clubhouse.

AFC Blackpool are at home to Wigan Robin Park on Tuesday 17th September

Both teams are away next Saturday 21st September in the 2nd Qualifying Round Of The FA Vase- AFC Blackpool are away at Winterton Rangers in North Lincolnshire and Squires Gate are away at Runcorn Linnets.

Ice Hockey: Blackpool Seagulls 7 - Altrincham Aardvarks 14

Saturday 7th September 2013
Blackpool Seagulls 7 - Altrincham Aardvarks 14

Period Scores: 3-5, 2-5, 2-4
Penalties In Minutes: Seagulls 16 - Aardvarks 12

Seagulls Scoring: Mark Gillingham 2+2, Gary Shearman 2+2, Chris Bamber 1+0, Bobby Hall 1+0, Brian Slater 1+0, Mick Buchanan 0+1, Stefano Simi 0+1, Dave Anthony 0+1, Craig Shaughnessy 0+1.

Seagulls MVP: Mark Gillingham (in photo - not from actual game)

Ignoring the final scoreline just for a moment this was a great game of ice hockey - and nowhere near as one-sides as the result suggests.

It was entertaining stuff from beginning to end and memorable for many reasons. First off, all credit to the  Aardvarks who agreed to come at play at short notice after original opponents Sheffield Squeelers had pulled out.  Then we had a minute's silence in honour of Harold Leese - long time supporter of ice hockey in Blackpool  - and it was nice to see his grandson Mark Gillingham playing for the Seagulls.

The game itself had everything you could wish for in a game of ice hockey:John Dunford - who played in nets for the Seagulls last weekend - was in goal for the Aardvarks. There were lots of goals, a few tussles, the drama of a penalty shot and - somewhat fittingly - Mark Gillingham picking up the MVP award at the end.

Blackpool Seagulls are in home action again next Saturday against Manchester Metros at the Jubilee Ice Arena on Cleveleys Promenade - 5pm face off.
