NWCFL - Preseason Friendly - AFC Blackpool 1- AFC Fylde 1

Honours were shared in this first pre-season run out for both sides in the picturesque - almost Olympicesque - setting of Blackpool's Stanley Park.

It was a very hot sunny day but generous shade was afforded the spectators in covered seating area of the arena, which was being used for the match as AFC Blackpool's ground is currently having improvement works done.

Local Artists Chosen For 2013 Jessica Foxley Stage at Colne RnB Festival

An impressive line-up of musical talent has been chosen to perform at this year’s Great British Rhythm and Blues Festival.

A total of nine acts will play as part of the Jessica Foxley Stage over the four day event at the end of August. The standard this year was exceptional, so much so that one band has been given a slot on the International Stage!

TC and The Money Makers (in photo left) will be performing on the Saturday evening in between the likes of Lil’ Jimmy Reed, Sugar Blue, Billy Branch and Charlie Musselwhite.

Bexley Square Blues Band, The Midnight Ramble, Tom Byrne and Friends, Minor Blues and The 45s will perform at various slots on the British Stage over the August Bank Holiday weekend.

And another three – Half Deaf Clatch (see photo right), Brother Duke and Lily and Ross – 15-year-old
students from Park High School in Colne - will play on the Acoustic Stage at the Lesser Muni over the four day event.

A total of 30 acts applied for a place, 12 auditioned and nine made it through.

Not only have the acts won the chance to play in front of hundreds of both national and international Blues fans, they have also won the chance to produce a demo at Studio 11 Recording Studios at The ACE Centre in Nelson.

The Jessica Foxley Stage was launched in memory of a talented, local musician who was killed in a car crash in July 2009.

This year’s Festival will be held from Friday, August 23rd until Monday, August 26th, with more than 600 artistes performing at 10 official venues over the four days.

Check out the Festival’s website www.bluesfestival.co.ukfor a full line-up of all ten official stages.

Help Needed To Develop Rugby League in Poland

Rugby League in Poland has existed for a little over two years yet in that short period of time a dedicated workforce of volunteers have made serious strides in introducing a sport to a nation which had little or no knowledge of the 13-a side game.

It all began in 2011 when 20-year-old student Lukasz Lukca was searching the internet for a sport or activity that he could introduce to his home city of Lodz to keep the youth off the streets. He came across a clip from the NRL on YouTube and was instantly impressed with the high intensity and level skill on display. He had found the perfect sport.

Lukasz has dedicated the last two years of his life to the development of Rugby League in Poland. In that time he has established the Lodz Magpies RLFC (in photo), hosted a successful tour of the Great Britain Student Pioneers in July 2012, delivered a large number of coaching session to schools across the city and recently applied to the Polish government for official recognition of the Poland XIII Association.

With finances tight and a large percentage of the players under-18 or on low incomes, it’s proving difficult to organise fixtures. There is no domestic competition in Poland and with only one amateur club, playing a game means travelling to a neighbouring country or financing teams to travel to Lodz.

To support the continued development of the game and the hard work Lukasz and his team of volunteers are doing on the ground, a Crowdfunding page has been set up to raise £1,200 to fund one away fixture and to host a game in Poland to help raise the profile of the sport.

Lukasz, who is Poland Rugby League chairman explained: “The players have been training every week for nearly a year with no fixtures. We are desperate to play a game otherwise we risk losing our members. We are also struggling to build commercial partnerships and find sponsors whilst we have no fixtures. With financial support we can organise games which will help us attract sponsorship and support our application with the Polish government to recognise our association.”

Please visit http://crowdfunder.co.uk/polandrl-/ to donate as much as you can afford to support the development of the great game!
