Review: Dry Rot at Blackpool Grand Theatre - until Saturday 2nd June!

We were lucky enough to see the opening night of this great comedy at the Blackpool Grand theatre and thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finsh. It''s a nice, old fashioned comedy - the  1956 film starred Brian Rix and Sid James - and is really suitable for all the family to watch together.

There's a really super cast: Liza Goddard (who I have liked ever since seeing her in "Skippy" all those years ago...), comic duo Hale & Pace who need no further explanation, Derren Nesbit who most people will probably best remember for playing the Nazi in the film "Where Eagles Dare",  Susan Penhaligon (Bouquet Of Barbed Wire, A Fine Romance ...) and Neil Stacy (Duty Free).

It really is a treat to be able to see all those famous actors from TV all on stage at the same time. But, that said, the supporting cast are also excellent - the whole thing has been very well cast and all the characters come across as totally believeable on stage.

There are lots of double entrendres, play on words and falling about - and it really IS incredibly funny.  It runs until Saturday in Balckpool and then around the country after that-  so do go and see it!

Book your seats now by calling the Grand Theatre Box Office on 01253 743339, online at www.blackpoolgrand.co.uk

Dry Rot, a vintage 50’s comedy, was written by John Chapman, who wrote over 200 TV comedies including the Emmy award winning Fresh Fields and Happy Ever After John is also known for his collaborations with Carla Lane on The Liver Birds and Ray Cooney on Move over Mrs Markham, My Giddy Aunt, Not Now Darling and There Goes the Bride.

Summer 2012 Show Line Up Announced For Blackpool North Pier Theatre

Blackpool’s North Pier Theatre has announced the final show in its summer season line-up of spectacular shows. Legendary comic BERNIE CLIFTON will present his FAMILY LAUGHTER SHOW at the theatre every Tuesday evening at 7.30pm from July 24th through to September 4th.
Bernie Clifton is one of the country’s most loved and most respected comics. A versatile entertainer, he has appeared on the Royal Variety Command Performance, is fondly remembered as compère of the BBC television show Crackerjack and has appeared on numerous television shows including his own series Theatre Royal.

Bernie has stated for a long time that he thinks good old fashioned “variety shows” are what have been missing in Blackpool for some years. He returns to his variety roots with his show Bernie Clifton’s Family Laughter Showthis summer. He has hand-picked a number of his friends and colleagues to appear on his show during the season.

The resident ‘guest list’ will include singers Tony Benedict and Lynn Kennedy, both of whom are well known and respected as singers and are regularly seen touring in the hit show Kings of Swing. There will, of course, be an appearance from Bernie’s good friend Oswald the Ostrich...!

Special guests appearing in each show will be announced in the press, online at www.northpierblackpool.co.ukand on social networking sites every week. The variety of entertainment will include a well-known illusionist act, comedy and magic, plus a variety of entertainers who will help to provide something for all the family.

Many people are unaware that Bernie began his career as a professional singer. For the past three years Bernie has been the featured vocalist with the National Concert Orchestra of Great Britain, and theatre-goers can expect to hear one or two of Bernie’s excellent vocal renderings.

The show will also feature The North Pier Orchestra directed by the ubiquitous Greg Francis, who has been resident Musical Director at the world-famous Tower Ballroom and The Sands Venue in Blackpool.

This show is pure “variety” – a genuine family-friendly show, with lots of fun on stage (and off!) - with something for everyone.

Bernie Clifton’s Family Laughter Show is at Blackpool’s North Pier Theatre every Tuesday evening at 7.30pm from July 24th to September 4th. Tickets are priced at just £16.50 for adults with first child free (with two full paying adults) and thereafter only £10!

West Side Story Coming To Blackpool Grand Theatre - 5th to 9th June

Fame School of the Arts return to The Grand this June with West Side Story.

After the success of last year’s production of Billy Elliot, Fame School of the Arts present West Side Story from Tuesday 5th June.

Set in post 9/11 New York City, Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story explores the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two teenage street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds.

The members of the Puerto Rican Sharks are taunted by the Jets, a white working class group. Then Tony, one of the Jets, falls in love with Maria, the sister of Barnado, leader of the Sharks…

Based on Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story’s dark theme, sophisticated music, extended dance scenes and focus on social problems marked a turning point in American musical theatre.

At Fame School of the Arts children aged from 6 to 16 receive top class dance, drama and singing lessons from a wide range of professional and experienced teachers – many of whom are professional performers in their own right.

Bringing together the very best in local young talent aged between 10 and 25 years old the School held auditions across Blackpool to cast the production.

Joe Martin, Principal of Fame School of the Arts and Musical Director on West Side Story said, “It is such a pleasure and a privilege to be back at the Grand Theatre. After the success of Billy Elliot the Musical there was nowhere else we could take such an iconic show as West Side Story. With the intimate setting of the theatre, accompanied by the helpfulness and friendliness of all its staff The Grand is fast becoming the theatrical home for Fame School of the Arts.”

The snapping fingers, that jazzily balletic race down an alley, the fire escape romance, the brutal war between the Jets and the Sharks…it’s all in West Side Story.

West Side Story is at The Grand Theatre from Tuesday 5 – Saturday 9 June 2012.

Tickets £8.00- £14.00 - Booking/Transaction fees apply

To book for any show you can call the Box Office on 01253 743339 or click on www.blackpoolgrand.co.uk , or visit the Grand Theatre information sales point in the Houndshill Shopping Centre.

New Book: "To The Queen... A Royal Drinkology"

With the kind permission of the Palace, the Secretary General of the British Monarchist Society, Thomas J. M. Mace Archer DeLacroix Mills has created a very unconventional book commemorating the Diamond Jubilee through drinks and alcohol entitled, 'To The Queen...A Royal Drinkology'. He dives into the wine cellars of Buckingham Palace, reveals the favourite tipples of the Royal Family from Queen Victoria to Prince William and further completes a full drinkology on each of the major alcohols with an emphasis on their royal origins. The book continues a dignified feel through narrative, poetry, the loyal addresses as well as fun facts, quotes and over 60 drink recipes. The foreword has been penned by Rafal Heydel-Mankoo of Burkes World Orders of Knighthood and Merit.

You can find out more about the book here:www.tothequeen.co.uk

Released with the book is a breathtakingly beautiful song and video which has been commissioned on behalf of the BMS as a tribute to the Queen for 60 years of selfless duty and service - the video can be viewed here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3YhK9D4N6-Y

"Thomas and the British Monarchist Society together defend our monarchy and our sovereign monarch. They are a necessary force in countering republican propaganda and I am proud to be a patron of the BMS. I wish Thomas every success with this book as well as the BMS in their vital work in retaining one of the cornerstones of our freedom. God save the Queen!"

Exciting new Pottery Studio opened in Birkenhead, Wirral - bringing back the spirit of Della Robbia - 18th May 2012

Janet Holmes, a Wirral potter (and a Cheshire woman of the year nominee) who has exhibited and taught on the Wirral for over 30 years opened the Rathbone Studio in Argyle Street, Birkenhead on Friday, 18th May 2012.

Opened by the Mayor of Wirral, Gerry Ellis, the day was a huge success with over 70 people attending. Among those present were the Wirral Councils's Heritage Officer, Eileen Wilshaw and Colin Simpson, Curator of the Williamson art gallery (that houses Della Robbia pottery pieces).  A highlight of the afternoon was a reading of an extract of a new book based on the Della Robia Pottery by its author, Gladys Mary Cole.
Janet says, “I am so excited, Della Robbia represented the golden age of the town and became internationally renowned. When I realised that 28 Argyle Street was empty, I felt it was opening a door from the past that shines a light on the present community to express themselves.
Not only will I be exhibiting my own work but there will be workshops that give people the technical skills to produce their own work and offer an environment that allows individual creativity, Della Robbia was founded by Conrad Dressler and Harold Rathbone, so I am proud to bring the Rathbone name back to Argyle Street. My work is so far from the highly glazed Della Robbia style but by following in the footsteps of those great potters maybe I can be the shape of things to come."
The potential to bring the sprit of the Della Robbia Pottery back to Birkenhead has been helped with the support of Methodist Housing and financial support through the Empty Shop Fund from the Wirral Borough Council.
At the opening, and for the following week, visitors will be able to create their own piece of pottery. These taster sessions will hopefully show people how rewarding it is to create their own individual pieces; ceramics could once again put Birkenhead's unique expression on the map.
Della Robbia (1894 - 1906) was highly distinctive pottery created at premises in Price Street, Birkenhead and at 28 Argyle Street, Birkenhead.  It was inspired in part by the work of Luca della Robbia, the Florentine sculptor (1399 – 1482) who perfected a special pottery glaze.

Gerard Kenny Coming To Fleetwood On 24th May

The Great American Song Book with Gerard Kenny is coming to Marine Hall, The Waterfront Venue,  Fleetwood on Thursday 24th May 2012.

Doors Open 7:00pm

Tickets £16.50 from 01253 887693 or online at: www.marinehall.co.uk

If any artist could be said to personify the classic American musical tradition, it is  Gerard Kenny. He was virtually born into the business.

For his latest project, however, Gerard Kenny is looking to others for inspiration. The Great American Songbook Tour will gather together some of  his favourite material. In Gerard's experienced hands, a set list  featuring songs such as 'My Funny Valentine', 'Moon River', 'I Get A Kick Out of  You', 'Every Time We Say Goodbye' and many more are given an extraordinary new lease of life.

For fans of the greatest selection of songs in popular music, it really doesn't get any better than this the son of a New York song and dance man, he made his public debut at the age of six playing piano on a version of the beautiful standard  'Where Or When'. Since then, he hasn't looked back. Whether writing for himself or artists such as Perry Como, Johnny Mathis, Shirley Bassey, Sacha Distel, James Last, Jack Jones and Marion Montgomery, Kenny's work has always had the  unmistakable air of a master craftsman.

Don’t miss this first ever appearance by Gerard Kenny at The Marine Hall, performing THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK as only he can ...... nobody does it better! He will be accompanied by his superb musicians, Sandy Burnett on bass, and Nick Poyner on drums
